My Story

My name is John Hill, and I currently teach high school dual enrollment English at Heritage Academy Maricopa through Rio Salado College. I have a passion for my students and the subjects I teach. My teaching philosophy is aggressively innovative. We must prepare students for communication and adaptability in a world where both the rate and degree of change occurs faster than ever before. Learn more about my teaching philosophy here.

I have completed Master of Arts degree work in English (Rhetoric & Composition) and Applied Linguistics at Arizona State University. I am also a postgraduate student at Arizona State where I hope to continue my studies and passion for learning in pursuing my PhD in English (Writing, Rhetorics, and Literacies).

My recent work includes “The Heart of the Story in Persuasive Writing,” which examines the cultivation of student-centered voice and authenticity in persuasive writing. I successfully defended my M.A. Applied Linguistics thesis entitled “The Effect of Orthography on L1 and L2 Korean Perception and Production” in May, 2005.

My current work explores two fertile areas: 1) the role of rhetoric and technology in shaping the future of composition pedagogy toward real-world writing applicability; and 2) the intersect of literacy identification and personal revision as a site for the emergence of voice and authenticity in composition pedagogy.

My other interests include technology and language change, digitally-mediated writing, and achieving literacy equity for marginalized writers, particularly second language writers.

In my spare time (I don’t have much of it), I enjoy writing, reading about writing, and drinking lots of coffee.

I met my wife in Seoul, South Korea, while doing what I love - teaching and traveling. In Korea, I also studied Korean linguistics at Seoul National University. We have two teenage boys that enjoy reading and writing along with all the other things teen boys are into.

My own story is one of adventurous exploration. In understanding the role of literacy and revision in my own story, my goal is to continuously expose myself to the ideas and stories of others through which I constantly seek to define and revise my own thinking, identity and . . . story.

My story is still being written, and it is always continuously being revised.
